Lynton and Lynmouth are considered to be the “Jewel in the Crown” of Exmoor National Park.
Poets have called it “England’s Little Switzerland”.
Lynton and Lynmouth became popular holiday resorts during the Napoleonic War
when Europe was effectively closed. Travelling here was arduous and took days
but it was worth the effort to see such magnificent that was relatively unknown.
Surrounded by the highest sea cliffs in England, the area can also boast the
second highest tidal range in the world and the first street lights in Britain
to name but a few.
Lynton sits atop a hill some 500 feet above sea level commanding views across
the Bristol Channel to South Wales. Lynmouth (mouth of the river Lyn) nestles
close the cliffs at sea level.
