The area
Lynton.jpg
Lynton and Lynmouth are considered to be the “Jewel in the Crown” of Exmoor National Park.
Poets have called it “England’s Little Switzerland”.

Lynton and Lynmouth became popular holiday resorts during the Napoleonic War when Europe was effectively closed. Travelling here was arduous and took days but it was worth the effort to see such magnificent scenery that was still relatively unknown.

Surrounded by the highest sea cliffs in England, the area can also boast the second highest tidal range in the world, the first street lights in Britain and the first small village to have mains electricity to name but a few.

Lynton sits atop a hill some 500 feet above sea level commanding views across the Bristol Channel to South Wales. Lynmouth (mouth of the river Lyn) nestles close the cliffs at sea level.

Valley of Rocks.jpg
We are surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, the Valley of Rocks here is inhabited by feral goats, ravens, peregrine and many other fascinating fauna and flora.
Exmoor Coast.jpg
Take a walk along the coast path, the best time to see the heather in flower is late August. The best time to have the place almost to yourselves is November to March.
Cliff Railway.jpg
The famous Cliff Railway will effortlessly transport you between Lynton and Lynmouth. A Victorian construction, that has changed very little over the years, still runs on just water and gravity!
Exmoor Ponies.jpg
If you wander the moors while you are here you are almost guaranteed to see the famous Exmoor Pony. Said to be rarer than the Giant Panda, the Exmoor Pony is an ancient breed, one of the very first horses.
Doone Valley.jpg
The Doone Valley in the heart of the moor was made famous by R D Blackmoor in his novel Lorna Doone. The names of characters featured in the novel can be found in local archives!
